Gifts that Give Back
by Allie Binford
Even though the biggest gift-giving holiday of the year has already come and gone, if you’re looking to spend a bit of that new Christmas money somewhere that counts, check out these gifts (for you or your friends) that support good causes.
I recently purchased a new wallet, purely for the style of it, only to find out the beautiful story behind it. ABLE sells “Beautiful products by women who have overcome.” In other words, all of their products are made by hardworking women in communities around the world. Their products are manufactured directly out of the communities they wish to impact - in an effort to end the cycle of dependency on charity. To read more on the story of the company and their products, check out their website here.
You’re probably familiar with this denim-obsessed brand, but did you know Madewell collaborates with charities and organizations to donate proceeds for good causes? Their current collaboration with Girls Inc. donates 25% of the purchase price to support Girls Inc.’s mission of “empowering young women through advocacy and education.” You can shop the collab online and in-stores.
If you read Laura’s earlier article on Shiffon, you know all about their pinky promise to donate 50% of the proceeds from their Duet Pinky rings towards supporting female entrepreneurs and startups. The motto behind the rings is “wear the change you want to see.” Even celebrities like Shailene Woodley and Nicole Kidman have joined in and wore their Shiffon jewels to the Emmy’s. But, if you’re ballin’ on a budget, these rings are a bit on the pricier side, so you may have to save up.
GRL PWR Giveback
Last, but definitely not least, I had to toss in a shameless plug for our original Girl Power Tees. If you check out our “shop” page on the blog, you’ll find that our trendy tees have a higher purpose than just being a cute t-shirt to toss on. Truth + Dare donates 100% of the proceeds from our shirts (that’s right - we don’t profit from selling our shirts!!) straight to charities that support women. Our current featured charity is Turning Point Alabama, a domestic violence shelter for women in West Alabama.
Whether you choose to support any of these great causes this holiday season or not, keep these companies in mind next time you need a last minute birthday gift. Why not give a gift that gives back?
