Winter Activities When You're Cold AF
by Laura Martinez
Typically, I try to live like Ellen DeGeneres as best I can, especially when it comes to this following wisdom:
Winter is hard. Everything requires so much more effort and so much more clothing than I typically enjoy. Just going to a bar for happy hour entails at least 15 minutes of feeling cold and another 5-7 minutes of defrosting. However, a girl can only binge so many episodes of Gossip Girl in a day. If Netflix has asked me three times if I’m still watching and if my last human interaction was with my Chinese delivery guy, I know it’s time to venture out of the apartment. Here are 7 activities you’ll want to brave the cold for!
1. Visit a museum
Museums are like the pools of winter, except you don’t have to worry about shaving or if your pale skin will blind other swimmers. There’s almost always a student discount you can use, and you’ll most definitely leave feeling super cultured with a hip insta pic. I always look for a featured fashion exhibit, like at FIT’s museum in NYC, but I also highly recommend checking out a classic art museum or an interactive science museum!
2. Find your new favorite coffee shop
Winter is actually a great time to explore hidden gems of coffee shops in your town. You’d probably hate to hang in one during the summer and miss out on even a second of precious tanning time, but they’re perfect for curling up with a book or catching up on work. Peruse Yelp or install CUPS app to find the cutest spots near you.
3. Have Game Night at a Brewery
Too cold to go out on the town, but you still need socialization? Local micro breweries are the perfect spot to meet up with your crew and get aggressive about Cards Against Humanity or Clue. They’re typically locally owned and operated, so you’ll get to try brews exclusive to your state. Find your new favorite brewery on this great site.
4. Stay woke
Catch up on the news (if you want to cry), learn a new skill or discover a new hobby. You won’t feel as bad watching seven episodes of The Crown if you’re simultaneously teaching yourself to knit—not that I’m speaking from experience. Take this quiz to find your new hobby, or catch up on everything going on in the world with Skimm Guides.
5. Try Out Whiskey Wonderland
Have a gals night and make all our drinks featured in Whiskey Wonderland to warm yourselves up from the inside out. Pairs well with any cheesy rom-com, or also a badass action movie.
6. Do a Double Feature
Put on your comfiest leggings and sweater on and fill your most obnoxious large tote with hidden snack contraband and head to the movie theater. Buy tickets for two movies and get comfy, you’re in this for the long haul. Pro-tip: Choose two very different movies, like a drama then a comedy.
No winter activities list would be complete without this one. If walking to class in the cold was the most effort you could give to the day, we won’t blame you for snuggling up in your bed with extra blankets and calling it a night.
Stay warm, gals! And think of me as I write this from my pool in Arizona.
